Performance Experiences at Penn State
Solo Experiences
When I was young, I had no idea that music was going to play such a pivotal role in my life. In elementary school, I did not participate in orchestra or choir because I just wanted to be in band. Initially, I thought I wanted to play percussion. However, when my parents informed me that was not going to happen, I decided to play the clarinet. Over ten years later, I have stuck with the clarinet and my love of music has grown with help from working with great clarinet teachers, band directors including the late Laura McBride, and esteemed clarinet players, including Robert Springs, David Krakauer, Mariam Adams of Imani Winds, and Dr. Janice Minor of James Madison University.
Before my studies at Penn State, I studied with Mrs. Barbara Duman in Reston, VA from fall 2001 through spring 2006. While here at Penn State, I have had the great opportunity to study with two amazing instructors. From Fall 2006 to Fall 2008, I studied with Professor Smith Toulson. Upon Professor Toulson's retirement following the Spring 2008 semester, I began studying with Professor Anthony Costa. While both professors differ in their teaching styles, I have learned a great deal from both instructors and hope to further grow as a musician under Dr. Costa's tutelage.
Here is a list of the repertoire that I have studied during my time at Penn State:
~Carl Maria von Weber: First Concerto in f minor, Op. 73
~Louis Spohr: Concerto No. 1, Op. 26
~André Messager: Solo De Concours
~Gordon Jacobs: select movements from Five Pieces for Solo Clarinet
~Leo Weiner: Peregi Verbunk
~Artie Shaw: Concerto for Clarinet
~Franz Schubert: Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock), D. 965
~Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concerto for Clarinet in A Major, K. 622 (1st & 2nd movements)
~Marc Delmas: Fantaisie Italienne
~Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 1 in f minor for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 120
~Michael Garman: Have You Thought About Puppets? (an unaccompanied clarinet duet)
~Igor Stravinsky: Three Pieces (1st & 2nd movements)
