Classroom Management Plan
| BACK TO MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL BAND |
As part of my work during my student teaching, I was asked to develop a classroom management plan to be used in our area of emphasis. Below is my Classroom Management Plan for a secondary instrumental music setting (here is the link to the file of my management plan)
High School Band Expectations
Mr. Stahl, director
[email protected]; (703)-798-9019 (cell)
Dear Parents,
My name is Mr. Stahl and I would like to welcome you to high school band! This is a prestigious ensemble with years of tradition and excellence. However, before we start rehearsing as an ensemble, I have detailed some expectations that I have for each and every student. All of these rules are conveniently posted on the band room bulletin board that is next to my office. Please read through these rules carefully with your students and fill out the form below. I look forward to meeting you as well as making music with your son or daughter!

RESPECT
“I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking of me...All I ask is that you respect me as a human being” ~ Jackie Robinson
Respect is not a request, it is a necessity for existence. We cannot function as an ensemble if everyone isn't on the same page. You need to make sure you are showing respect for YOURSELF, your PEERS, your DIRECTOR, any SUBSTITUTES or GUESTS that are working with the ensemble, the BAND ROOM, the BAND LOCKER ROOM, and THE MUSIC. Students should display a positive and respectful attitude for the group; work for the betterment of the group. WE is more important than ME!
“Without feelings of respect, what is there to distinguish men from beasts?” ~ Confucius

Rules and Consequences
1. The District Code of Conduct takes precedence at all times.
*CONSEQUENCE: Failure to obey these rules in the classroom will result in the appropriate disciplinary action as detailed in your student handbook.
2. There will be NO FOOD, NO DRINKS, & NO GUM IN THE BAND ROOM.
*CONSEQUENCE: Any food or drink that I see in the room will be thrown away IMMEDIATELY! Similarly, if you are caught chewing gum in the band room, you will be asked to spit it out IMMEDIATELY! After one warning, you will lose a full letter grade from your participation grade that day and if it occurs too frequently, you will be written up for detention.
3. Rehearsals are meant to be a fun learning environment, but there are times to be focused and times to be relaxed. The key to success=BALANCE! NO extraneous talking in rehearsals, especially when the director is talking. If you have a question about the music, raise your hand and ask the director.
*CONSEQUENCE: Depending on how frequent this occurs, consequence can range from points being deducted from participation grade to contacting parents to removal from rehearsals and possibly (if constantly and flagrantly ignoring rule) removal from the ensemble.4. With the limited time we have to rehearse everyday, you need to be prompt in getting ready for rehearsal. As part of the commitment of being a member of this ensemble, you need to be in your seat ready to play with MUSIC and other materials (reeds/mutes/sticks/PENCILS, etc.) when the clock strikes 12:00pm. Failing to do this will result in being marked late. I will give you enough time to pack up and get to your next class, so please be punctual to mine.
4. With the limited time we have to rehearse everyday, you need to be prompt in getting ready for rehearsal. As part of the commitment of being a member of this ensemble, you need to be in your seat ready to play with MUSIC and other materials (reeds/mutes/drum sticks/valve oil/PENCILS, etc.) when the clock strikes 12:00 pm. Failure to be ready to rehearse by then by this time (with exception to those who arrive late with a signed pass) will result in being marked late. I will give you enough time to pack up and get to your next class, so please be punctual to mine.
*CONSEQUENCE: If deemed by the director as unexcused (no permissible pass/signature presented), the student will lose a full letter grade for their participation grade for that particular day. In addition, students will need to make up time missed from rehearsal at a later point in time. Finally, if this becomes a frequent occurrence, the student will be removed from the ensemble.
5. You are responsible for having your own music, instrument, and a pencil at all rehearsals. Don’t expect a stand partner to cover for you! I will do random music & pencil checks in rehearsals, so always be prepared!
*CONSEQUENCE: Failure to have your music or pencil will result in loss of two full letter grades for your participation grade for the day. Failure to have your instrument will result in a 0 for your participation grade for the day.
6. If a student is unable to participate due to illness or injury, the student is still expected to participate in the rehearsal by following along in their score and making all necessary rehearsal markings. For injuries or illnesses, please have parent send me a doctor's note or a written e-mail explaining the situation prior to rehearsal.
*CONSEQUENCE: Failure to have a parents' note will result in a 0 for your participation grade for the day.
7. ALL instruments must be returned to their proper places following rehearsal. No instruments/handouts/other class materials should be left on the floor or in the music room. Clean up after yourself. The music room needs to be kept clean. Also, if it isn't yours, DON'T TOUCH IT.
*CONSEQUENCE: Repeated infractions will result in loss of privileges (possible exclusion from social activities, added responsibility of cleaning up the band room, etc.)
8. Foul language is not permitted during rehearsal.
*CONSEQUENCE: Any instance of profanity in the band room will result in the student being written up. A second time will result in immediate removal from the ensemble.
9. Cell phones are not permitted during rehearsal.
*CONSEQUENCE: If I see a phone out, I take it away for the rest of the day. Students can come retrieve their phone at the end of the day once classes are over.
10. All students are recommended (though not required) to study privately. See me if you would like to be referred to a private teacher.

REWARDS!!!
I will keep a daily record of:
- Attendance
- The level of focus/attention of the ensemble
- The level of progress made from rehearsal to rehearsal
- The level of music making done individually
Based on these records, rewards will be given to you (established by the director).

To wrap things up, here is a pearl of wisdom I heard from a great mentor of mine:
“You are never really going to enjoy something until you are good at it!”
So parents, stay involved in your student's studies and keep them practicing and involved in music! If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me by e-mail or on my cell phone.
Sincerely,
Ryan Stahl
Band Director

In addition, through my work with the Middle Level Guitar Course at Penns Valley, I developed my own set of expectations and consequences relevant to that particular course that supplemented the course syllabus.
