Portfolio Assessment for Elementary Band
Portfolio for 2nd Year Woodwind Players
Purpose
The purpose of this portfolio is for you to further develop mastery of your instrument and understanding of music in the pursuit of becoming a well-rounded musician.
Skills demonstrated through portfolio
-Listening to other members of the ensemble when performing
-Developing intonation and technique
-Listening to other great performers on their major instrument
-Broadening the student's musical appreciation and understanding through greater exposure to music
Activities/Assignments
Required (will be recorded by teacher on Flip camera for assessment)
-Play all major scales up to 2#'s and 2b's, minimum 1 octave
-Play band pieces all the way through
-Play warm-up exercises from memory
Choose three additional assignments to complete for your portfolio
-Write up a report on a recent concert that you have been to (who was playing, what was played, how did it sound)
-Listen to recordings of the band pieces while looking at your part and write a short report on what you heard in the recordings and what you think you can improve upon in your performance of the works.
-Write a report on a prominent musician on your major instrument, either living or dead. Use multiple sources, Wikipedia may be one of them.
-Listen to a CD of a major symphony orchestra or wind ensemble and write a brief report on the ensemble, the pieces being played, and what you heard on the recording.
-Record yourself practicing at least 5 different times in a two-week period.
