Black Lake Elementary School Beginning Choir
Ching a Ring Chaw (Unison) by Aaron Copland
Published by Boosey & Hawkes, Catalog # 1802347 at JW Pepper, Easy difficulty
A lively choral work by famed American composer Aaron Copland. Featuring piano accompaniment, this song will work on the ensembles diction and singing faster rhythms at faster tempos.
Good Night (A Russian Song) (Unison/Two-Parts) by Dmitri Kabalevsky, Arranged by Doreen Rao
Published by Boosey & Hawkes, Catalog # 1665843 at JW Pepper, Easy difficulty
A lyrical lullabye that has been arranged for beginning choir. Featuring accompaniment on piano and Orff instruments, this work is a great song to work on transitioning elementary voices from unison to two-part textures and working on singing at slower tempos.
Foggy Bottom Middle School Beginning Orchestra
Dragonhunter by Richard Meyer
Published by Alfred Music Publishing, Catalog # 00-20797 at Alfred Music Publishing, Grade 1
This riveting elementary piece fits the imagery of the title with the upper strings chasing the dragon in the lower strings through the use of notes from the D Major scale with no slurs and no sixteenth notes. Work on pizzicato and arco bowings will be crucial to the success of this piece.
Apollo Suite, 2. Waltz by Merle Isaac
Published by Alfred Music Publishing, Catalog # 00-12750 at Alfred Music Publishing, Grade 1
A classic work for beginning string orchestra that develops different styles for beginning string players. Feeling the waltz tempo and developing the waltz style will be the biggest challenges to work on in this piece.
Intermission
Mrs. Shipley's 6th Grade General Music Class

Meeting at Tryon Palace by Richard Saucedo
Published by Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation, Inventory # HL 04002867 at Hal Leonard, Grade 2

Section II: Budgeting for Elementary Project
Black Lake Elementary School Advanced Band
Shaker Variants by Elliot del Borgo $45.00 for Full Score & Parts @ Alfred Music Publishing
Meeting at Tryon Palace by Richard Saucedo $50.00 for Full Score & Parts @ Hal Leonard Publishing Corp.
+Vibraslap (for Meeting at Tryon Palace) $19.50 @ Suzuki Educational Instruments
Subtotal for Band = $114.50
I decided to purchase a vibraslap for Richard Saucedo's Meeting at Tryon Palace to fill out my auxiliary percussion needs for the piece. When trying to find a vibraslap, I compared products and prices at the websites of West Music, Suzuki Education Instruments, and Gamble Music. I ended up going with Suzuki Music's vibraslap (model VS-200 for $19.50) because the vibraslap appeared to be of good quality and it cost $20 less than an identical vibraslap sold by West Music.
Foggy Bottom Middle School Beginning Orchestra
Dragonhunter by Richard Meyer $40.00 for Full Score & Parts @ Alfred Music Publishing
Apollo Suite, 2. Waltz by Merle Isaac $55.00 for Full Score & Parts@ Alfred Music Publishing
+Franz Hoffman ¾ Double Bass Package $1,099.00 for ¾ Double Bass and Bow @ Shar's Music
Subtotal for Orchestra = $1,194.00
I decided to purchase another Double Bass for the orchestra concert. Having very little idea where to turn for resources, I went to one of the websites we discussed a lot for instrument purchase during our string presentations, Shar's Music (http://www.sharsmusic.com). While there, I explored their website devoted solely to double bass instruments and found the Franz Hoffman Double Bass (item # PB100T34). I decided to go with this instrument because the price was very reasonable for a quality student instrument ($1,099 for any size instrument, though I decided to go with the ¾ size bass), the price includes the price of the appropriate size bow (having a limited knowledge of bows, I couldn't pick between the right material or the French or German style bow), and even though other sellers had cheaper basses (Woodwind Brasswind, etc.) I turned to a trusted website by string educators with years of quality and experience behind it.
